Garages We own garages throughout the New Forest area that are available for rent to individuals and organisations.

Garages are available to rent from £10.40 per week. Due to VAT rules, we must add VAT where garages are let to non-tenants or organisations. Garage rent is payable in advance.

  • If you wish to rent a garage, you can apply now. Forms can also be collected from any local information office. We will hold your details until a garage becomes available. For general enquiries you can also call the number above.
  • If you need to talk to someone about rent arrears or repairs to a garage you currently rent, please contact us.


 Garage applications

  1. Applicants must be aged 18 years or over.

  2. A licence will not be offered where rent is owed for any current of former tenancy or licence on any dwellings or garages rented from the council.

  3. If a council tenant purchases their home, they may continue to rent their garage but if they own the freehold on their home, the rent will become liable to include VAT.

  4. Applications will be accepted for second garages but priority is given to those without a garage.

  5. Preference will be given to applicants who are resident within the New Forest district.


Commencing a garage licence

  1. Four weeks rent is payable before keys are issued.

  2. Rent is payable strictly in advance.

  3. A signed and witnessed garage licence agreement must be handed in at the time garage keys are collected.

  4. Identification and proof of home address must be provided along before garage keys can be released. We accept current valid photographic ID, such as a driving licence or passport. For your address, we require a bank statement or utility bill issued within the past three months.

  5. Garages are for the purposes of storing a motor vehicle. The garages cannot be guaranteed to be water-tight and general storage is discouraged. Items stored are at your own risk and NFDC accepts no liability for damage to items stored in any garage.


Charges relating to a garage licence

  1. The rent from 1 April 2019 is £10.40 (£12.48 plus VAT). Our VAT policy is stated below.

  2. Lock changes are charged at £94.07 (£112.88 plus VAT).

  3. Garage clearances are charged at actual cost. VAT is added to this charge.


Policy for charging VAT

VAT is charged at the standard rate for all garage licences, except where the following applies:

  1. The garage is rented by an individual who is a named tenant of a NFDC-owned home or is the leaseholder of a flat where NFDC is the freeholder.

  2. A maximum of two garages can be VAT exempt. VAT will be added to additional garages.
