New council home "means everything" to tenant

Tenants have begun moving into the first of 17 new council homes in Knight Gardens, off Alexandra Road, in Lymington. In a significant boost to the provision of affordable housing in that part of the New Forest, the council has acquired the new build properties from developer Pennyfarthing Homes.

Cllr Cleary and Richard Knott Alexandra Road On Tuesday 17 July NFDC's portfolio holder for housing services, Councillor Jill Cleary visited the site of the new homes. Tenants have moved into seven of the new properties, with the remainder due to be handed over to the council for occupation in September and October.

"It is great to see tenants settling into their new council homes" said Councillor Cleary, "I hope all the families will be very happy here."

For one of the new tenants, Clare Solway, being allocated a council home "means everything". Clare and her three children have moved into one of the new three bedroom homes. The family were made homeless after their private landlord sold the property they were living in and Clare had to leave work to care for her children, one of whom has Asperger's Syndrome and another has autism. The family ended up living in budget hotels and temporary housing.

"This has really changed our lives" says Clare. "The children are settling into school and I have been able to go back to work."

Viewing the new properties, Councillor Cleary commented:

"I am very pleased that we have been able to add these 17 new properties to our council housing stock of more than 5000 homes and provide some more much-needed affordable housing in Lymington" she continued.  "We have recently committed to accelerating our housing programme and we will be spending over £17 million this year on building and acquiring new council homes for local people."

The homes in the Alexandra Road development are five one-bedroom properties, seven two-bedroom and five three bedroom houses to be allocated to tenants who are in housing need. 17 households will have moved into the new homes by the Autumn of this year.
